Common Dental Emergencies
A toothache is a common trouble. This may indicate an infection or a need for root canal therapy or a tooth extraction. Over the counter medications can be taken to remedy the pain, or you can hold an ice pack against the part of your face where the tooth is affected. A swollen or bloody lip or tongue can also be caused by the injury. When this happens use a clean cloth and bite down to apply pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. For a swollen lip, applying an ice pack can help.
A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention in order to save the tooth. If the necessary steps are taken immediately after the tooth has been knocked out, the likelihood of the tooth being reinserted in the mouth successfully is dramatically higher. The following steps should be taken in order to do so:
- Pick up the tooth carefully, holding it from the top. Do not touch the root of the tooth to avoid further damage.
- Rinse off the tooth gently to ensure it is clean. Do not scrub the tooth or remove the tissues attached. Place a towel or washcloth in the sink to block the drain and avoid any additional mishaps.
- If you can, it is important to gently place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place by gently biting down. If you can’t do this, put the tooth in a small container or in a cup of milk if possible. This is done to keep the tooth alive.
- Call your dentist immediately to see if they are available or if there is another dentist you can visit that offers emergency services.
- The longer you wait to re-implant the tooth, the less chance the tooth will be viable and able to be saved.
A lost filling can be addressed by placing a softened gum in the spot where the filling is lost. This can protect the area until you are able to reach an emergency dentist. It is vital that you see a dentist immediately to avoid any issues developing in the tooth such as growth of bacteria or risk of infection. If something gets stuck in your teeth, you can try to use a dental floss to loosen or remove it.
Tips for Dental Emergencies
When it comes to keeping and replacing a tooth that has been dislodged or knocked out, always remember to keep the area clean and moist. Rinse it with clean water, making sure not to touch the root area and then preserve it until it is placed back in the socket. As mentioned above, place the tooth between your cheek and gums, or keep it in a cup of milk. This will preserve the tooth during your trip towards the dentist.
When you encounter trauma that results in a broken tooth, make sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water. Using a tea bag or gauze, you should apply pressure to the area that is bleeding until it has stopped. Apply an ice pack to the affected area to reduce swelling.
If you lose a dental crown, be sure to rinse it with water and try to reinsert it. This applies if the crown is still in one piece. If the crown is broken, gather all the pieces together and bring them with you to the emergency dental clinic.
